McDonald's Reusable Cup — Globelet

It was always Globelet’s dream to see single-use plastic cups out of McDonald's and now it looks like it may be a reality.

The big kids just announced that they will be trialing reusable coffee cups to get rid of their single-use plastic coffee cup waste.

“Reuse is a really interesting, important tool in a suite of tools that we will need, and we’re exploring as we look to keep waste out of nature,” says Jenny McColloch, vice president of global sustainability at McDonald’s Corporation.

Jenny like many sustainability professionals is leading the way in stopping single-use plastic at their corporations. So how doe’s a reusable coffee system work?

Reusable returnable cup systems have been lead by Globelet globally now for over 7 years. Here is how they work.

  1. Choose your vessel.
    - Material: The best material to use is PP #5 plastic. It is reusable, dishwasher safe, 100% recyclable, and durable.
    - Mono: Make sure the product is 100% one type of material. If you have different materials for the lid vs cup it is harder to manage the lifecycle.
    - Choose your shape and sizes.
If you need a custom cup or help to find a cup style, Globelet can help your cafe or corporation do this.

2. Choose your incentive and cost structure
— You will either need to do a deposit system or some form of an incentive system to get consumers to want to return the cups. Globelet processes thousands of refunds every year and has vast experience testing multiple incentive and deposit systems.

3. Choose how you will wash them
- Plastic cups don’t wash and dry well in traditional commercial dishwashers. It is important to do proper testing to ensure the machine you are using or the contractor is washing the packaging properly. This is the dishwasher we designed to ensure we can wash cups cheaper than disposables and ensure they are clean.

Logistically every single cafe, corporation, or event needs a custom-designed solution to fit their needs. The cup used at Starbucks isn’t the same as McDonald's and logistically back of the house, how the operations works is also different. You need to consult with a company like Globelet to find the best solution to fit your needs.
